Tutoring and support services are available to students in the elementary and high school Indian Education resource rooms Monday – Friday. Students who need additional help in a subject may be given the opportunity by their teachers to come to our resource rooms. High school students often use their study halls & lunch times to utilize the Indian Education services. In the last 9 years graduation rates for American Indian students in the Virginia schools has increased by 53%. Our goal is for all American Indian students to receive their high school diploma.

Learning about “manoominike”-wild rice harvesting

Students in Karen Sandstrom’s 6th grade social studies classes had the opportunity to learn about “manoominike,” wild rice harvesting. Anishinaabe Clubs

Every Monday after school Anishinaabe (Original People) Clubs are held in the Virginia high school and Roosevelt Elementary. These clubs give students the opportunity to learn more about American Indian culture through crafts, guest speakers, games and Ojibwe language lessons. Anishinaabe Club is open to all students.

Learning about the Drum

Guest Speaker, Terry Goodsky, spent a day in Ms. Knolls World History classes teaching the students about the importance of traditional Native American drums in the culture. He also shared about social gathering called powwows, the regalia worn, and the significance of the various dances.
