Welcome to Indian Education 2011-2012!

We welcome you to an exciting new school year! We have a record number of American Indian students in this district—133 students, Head Start through grade 12! With 87 students pre-K – 6th, Sarah Strong is now working full-time in the elementary schools. We are happy to have back Bois Forte band member, Michele Maki, working Monday – Friday as the high school Academic Advisor.
Classroom cultural presentations have started with the Running Bear family dance demonstrations & the Ojibwe animal puppets.
High School Anishinaabe Club started with the movie “Smoke Signals”. Elementary Anishinaabe Club will start October 10th. Field trips are in the planning. Already on October 17th our senior high students will be visiting the College of St. Scholastica. The elementary students will soon be making a trip to the Bois Forte Heritage Center.
IMPORTANT: Due to conflicts in building use, THE FALL GATHERING HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL NOVEMBER 3RD.

Students visit Career Fair @ Fond du Lac College

High School Indian Education students had the opportunity to attend the Career Fair at the Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College in Cloquet. Bear Center Visit

Indian Education 4th and 5th grade students recently visited the Bear Center in Ely. Although all bears were in hibernation, they were able to view through glass “Honey” as she tossed around in her sleep. Larry Yazzie Performs

In March international performer and World Champion Fancy Dancer, Larry Yazzie (Meskwaki/Dine), performed for the Virginia Roosevelt Elementary and Junior High schools. Running Bear Family Teaches About Dance

Virginia Indian Ed. Receives National JOM Award

The Virginia Indian Education Program received the regional National Johnson O’Malley Award for its exemplary program for American Indian students and for an active Parent Advisory Committee. Anishinaabe Clubs

Every Monday after school Anishinaabe (Original People) Clubs are held in the Virginia high school and Roosevelt Elementary. These clubs give students the opportunity to learn more about American Indian culture through crafts, guest speakers, games and Ojibwe language lessons. Anishinaabe Club is open to all students.

Learning about the Drum

Guest Speaker, Terry Goodsky, spent a day in Ms. Knolls World History classes teaching the students about the importance of traditional Native American drums in the culture. He also shared about social gathering called powwows, the regalia worn, and the significance of the various dances.
